Blowing Rock Boulders

From Boone, take Hwy 321 S to Blowing Rock. Go past the shoppes on the parkway and cruise on main street until you hit the first stoplight. Take a right onto Hwy 221 for about a mile. You will pass the exit for the blue ridge parkway. Right after the exit, you will see a rest stop on your left. Pull into the rest stop and follow until the end. There is a parking area directly in front of the trail which is where we are allowed to park. Don’t park in front of the restrooms or on the grass. Also, stay off the sides of Hwy 221. Parking is a big issue for Blowing Rock. If the parking area is full, please check out another boulder field. In the winter, the rest area is closed with barricades at each end. This decreasing the parking significantly (only a few cars can squeeze beside them without being in the road). The park service has a big problem with climbers taking up the entire parking lot and not leaving any room for the tourists. Please help us keep BR open by obeying the parking rules.

Buckeye Knob / The Barn Boulders

From Boone, take 421 North for about 8 miles and then turn left on Walls Road. Take a right on Joe Shoemaker Rd and after 1 mile, turn left onto Silverstone Rd. 0.5 miles later, turn left onto old US 421 and then right on Laurel Branch Rd. Follow Laurel Branch Rd for 0.7 miles and then look for a barn on the right with skis on the side of it. There is a steep, one lane paved driveway that goes up a hill just left of the driveway for the barn, take that and then take a right on the first gravel road just about 100 feet up the hill. Stay right at the fork and follow that a short ways to an obvious set of parking spots (go slow, this road is rough in spots). Pull off in one of the spots and please don’t block the road / driveway. If the parking area is full, you can park along the side of Laurel Branch Rd with your wheels off the road and not blocking any entrances. You’ll see a sign and blue flagging directing you to the trail from the parking area.

Grandmother Boulders

From Boone, take Highway 105 S towards Banner Elk/Linville. Once you get into Tynecastle (there is a McDonalds on your left), go straight through the light. You will enter the town of Linville after a couple miles. Once in Linville, make a left onto Highway 221 N. Stay on this road until you see an exit to get onto the Blue Ridge Parkway. At the stop sign, take a right onto the parkway. Continue down the road until you see either the Grandfather Mountain Overlook Parking or continue a to the Grandmother Parking Area(Mile 307.4). If these parking lots are full, don’t park on the grass! Please go to another area. The park service has a big problem with climbers taking up the entire parking lot and not leaving any room for the tourists. Thanks.

Lost Cove Boulders

From Boone, take 105 S towards Banner Elk. Once in Tynecastle, stay straight like you’re heading towards Linville. Once you get to the stop light, continue straight. You will come to a 4 way stop sign. Take a left onto Roseboro Rd. Stay on Roseboro until you hit the Blue Ridge Parkway. Go straight across the parkway (set your odometer). Go 1.1 miles down the gravel road. You will see a couple big boulders on the left and a pull off right below them. You can either park there, or continue down the road another .1 miles. The next pull off is on the right. Like I mentioned above, there is very limited space to park. If you plan to check out this boulder field, please carpool! Don’t park in the road.

The Dump Routes / Boulders

The Dump is roadside off of Highway 221 between Blowing Rock and Linville. Coming from Blowing Rock (headed south), look for a large dirt parking lot on the left just past the Avery/Caldwell county line sign. Directly across the road you can see the Dump sport routes. Follow the trail across the road to the base of the crag.  To access the boulders walk south (toward linville) on the left side of the road. You will see the boulders down on your left as you walk. Continue until you get to the very short trail that will take you down to the boulders.

Little Wilson

Take Hwy 221 towards Avery county. If you are coming from the Boone area, once you pass into Avery county stop at the 3rd parking area, 0.8 miles from the dump parking lot. If you cross the bridge/waterfall you have gone too far. From parking lot, walk down the road until you find the well beaten trail (what was once an effective but unfortunate trail identifier, the red rusted refrigerator has since been removed). Turn left there and follow the trail. It is a 20 to 30 minute hike that involves a lot of either downhill (To get there) or uphill (to get out) all in all, very worth it!

Sunken Treasure

Drive 6 miles south on Hwy 221 from its intersection with Holloway Mtn. Rd.  Park on the left side (east side) of the road, in a small pullout, next to a line of wooden posts.  Walk about 0.2 miles south (towards Linville) until you can cut up the hill at a small creek bed just past a boulder. The trail cuts off to the left after just a little ways.  Continue up and left for about 100 ft to the crag.

Ship Rock

Drive 6 miles south on Hwy 221 from its intersection with Holloway Mtn. Rd.  Park on the left side (east side) of the road, in a small pullout, next to a line of wooden posts.  Walk about 0.2 miles south (towards Linville) until you can cut up the hill at a small creek bed just past a boulder. The trail cuts off to the left after just a little ways.  Continue up and left for about 100 ft to the crag.
