Dave Phlegar: Guide

Dave Phlegar has over twenty years of climbing experience, including ten years of formal group and individual guiding, and an additional five years of informal guiding. Dave’s personal climbing background extends throughout the southeastern U.S. in the form of traditional multi-pitch, sport climbing, bouldering, and in recent years moderate mountaineering in the Wind River Range and Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Along with Pingora Peak, the Northwest Route of Steeple Peak, and
Irene’s Arete on Disappointment Peak, Dave has also accomplished notable routes in Yosemite National Park. Other favorite places outside of North Carolina that Dave has visited in his climbing career are the Shawangunks (NY), Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons (UT), Smith Rock (OR), Banff National Park (Alberta, Canada), and numerous trips to the New River Gorge (WV). Dave holds a BS in Natural Resource Management from Western Carolina University. Dave has been guiding for Rock Dimensions since it’s beginning in 1998, and previously with the former Charlotte Climbing Center. Dave brings to his guiding skills not only an array of climbing experiences, but also a genuine enthusiasm for the outdoors and exceptional leadership abilities that are valuable in instilling confidence and trust in his clients.
 

Will Shirey: Guide

Will Shirey has over 15 years experience as an outdoor educator. A multi-faceted guide, Will can be found climbing local crags as well as working in the area’s caves for Rock Dimensions. Also a seasoned raft guide Will brings extensive knowledge of working with young people to the RD crew. He served as the Executive Director for the Mountain Alliance, a local organization which develops leadership through adventure and service learning in high school students.
Like many of the RD crew Will got his guiding start working at ASU Outdoor Programs. He moved on to Eagle’s Nest Foundation where he led trips to many western rafting and mountaineering locales. Being a father himself, Will enjoys working with kids and despite the constant draw of mountain sports still occasionally escapes to the beach for a set or two or twelve. He is a Wilderness First Responder and holds a Masters Degree in Geography from Appalachian State University.
 

Anthony Love: Guide

Anthony Love has been climbing since 1987. He started in Dallas, Tx. His drive to climb helped to lead him to Boone, where he attended Appalachian State University graduating with a Bachelors degree in Geology. While at Appalachian Anthony gained a breadth of knowledge climbing at many of the High Country's premier bouldering areas. Realizing his strengths from bouldering several of Anthony's friends dragged him onto the cliffs. Since, he has grown quite fond of climbing at many of the areas multipitch destinations. Whether it is on boulders, sport routes , or traditional climbs, he pushes himself to excel at high levels. Anthony has climbed in 16 states and 2 different countries.
When he is not outside concentrating on rocks, Anthony works full-time as the Lab technician for the Geology Department at Appalachian State University. Anthony has enjoyed guiding for Rock dimensions since Summer of 06'. He says it is a new and refreshing to meet and introduce people to their first experience with rock climbing
 

Lynn Willis: Guide

A native of East Tennessee, Lynn Willis was introduced to climbing in his youth during the 1970’s at summer camp in North Carolina. He discovered the joy of photography with his Brownie camera around the same time. Later, in 1988, at the University of Tennessee, he started to pursue climbing more seriously and spent most weekends on the steep sandstone of The Tennessee Wall in Chattanooga. Summers were spent traveling and climbing in the West or guiding rock climbing courses at Looking Glass Rock in North Carolina. With 18 years of rock climbing and 12 years of ice climbing experience, he has traveled all over the Southeast and made many trips to the Cascades, Tetons, Rockies and the Sierras as well as climbing trips to the Southwest desert, Mexico and Canada. He has dozens of first ascent rock climbs and over 100 boulder problems to his credit. Growing up in east Tennessee also allowed Lynn the opportunity to explore many of the caves in that area. Lynn now guides caving trips for Rock Dimensions in southeastern VA and TN.
Lynn has worked in the outdoor industry in numerous facets including many years doing outdoor education and climbing instruction. While living in Flagstaff, Arizona for a few years, he worked at Wired Bliss making camming units. Later, Lynn Willis landed in Boone, North Carolina as Advertising Manager of Misty Mountain Threadworks. This is where he met his wife Abby - a native of Boone - and later married on the lake of the summer camp where he first learned to climb.
When not out crawling’ through the rhododendron forest discovering virgin rock, he works as an art director, graphic designer, and freelance photographer. His portfolio includes images of adventure sports and mountain landscapes from the Appalachians to the Himalayas. He won first prize in the adventure category of the Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition and his photographs have been published in various outdoor catalogs and advertisements in Rock & Ice, Climbing, and Blue Ridge Outdoors magazines.
